If you already stay in Japan as a status of residence (i.e. visa) “College Student” and will go on to the university, you need to apply for “Extension of Period of Stay” from 3 months prior to the expiration date on your residence card.

Please note that your “permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” will be cancelled when you apply for extension of period of stay. Therefore, you need to apply it again if necessary.

Furthermore, although the Immigration Services Agency said that a standard procedure duration is “two weeks to a month”, considering a huge congestion at the regional immigration bureaus these days, it is better to expect that it takes much longer.
